Plastic Surgery: A Mix of Medical and Cosmetic Reasons

Plastic Surgery: A Mix of Medical and Cosmetic Reasons

Have you ever undergone a plastic surgery procedure? Was it for purely cosmetic reasons, or did it have medical significance?

A Small Lump on the Chin

For me, a minor medical issue led to an unexpected plastic surgery experience. Initially, I noticed a small lump on my chin that wouldn’t budge. It resembled a pimple that never fully came to a head. My initial consultations with the family doctor suggested cosmetic reasons, but further evaluation led to an appointment with a plastic surgeon. After an examination, it was determined that the bump was a slow-growing benign tumor. The surgeon performed the procedure with precision, resulting in no visible scar and, most importantly, the tumor has not returned.

This experience revealed a dual motivation: it was both a cosmetic and medical necessity. Minor medical procedures can sometimes necessitate the assistance of plastic surgery to address any resultant issues, such as the removal of benign tumors.

Lasering Away Coarse Hair

I have had some coarse hair lasered off my neck, a purely cosmetic procedure. However, the results were not entirely satisfactory due to the light color of my hair. For laser treatment to be effective, it needs to locate the dark hair follicles and target them at the root. Unfortunately, my hair was predominantly light and white, leaving many hair follicles untouched. This illustrated that not all cosmetic procedures are without challenges and potential downfalls. In my case, the procedure was classified as a minor surgery.

Procedures of a Different Nature

At the age of 29, I decided to undergo two major procedures: a rhinoplasty and a chin augmentation. The impetus behind these surgeries was twofold. I had broken my nose when I was 12, which left a noticeable bump on the bridge. Over time, this bump became an aesthetic concern, and combined with my naturally drooping chin, I felt it was time to address both issues for a more refined profile.

The surgery was an absolute success. The results were transformative, and I couldn't be more grateful. Having John Stretumph, a renowned plastic surgeon, as my partner in this journey was a blessing. He ensured that the process was as comfortable as possible and took exceptional care of me. Not only did this surgery enhance my physical appearance, but it also boosted my confidence in immeasurable ways.

These experiences highlight the multifaceted nature of plastic surgery: from purely medical procedures to those motivated by cosmetic reasons, and even those that blend the two. Each case is unique and underscores the importance of proper medical assessment and patient care.
