While the visibility of long hair below the shoulders among Black women may not be as common in mainstream media, it is by no means rare. In fact, the variety and amazing lengths that can be achieved among Black hair types are a testament to the beauty and resilience of this community. Let's dispel this misconception and explore the truth behind the 'curl shrinkage' phenomenon.

Understanding Curl Shrinkage

It's essential to understand the concept of 'curl shrinkage' to appreciate the natural lengths that can be achieved in Black hair. Think of it like a slinky toy that is coiled and compact when undisturbed. When you straighten it out, it appears longer. Similarly, certain hair types, particularly those ranging from 2c to 4c, can be seen as coiled and much shorter in their natural state. When straightened, they display remarkable length.
