The Journey of Self-Haircuts: A Personal Experience

The Evolution of Self-Haircuts

My journey with self-haircuts began at the tender age of 12 when I started experimenting with the scissors instead of relying on my barber, who had a knack for leaving my hair in a messy, unappealing state. Fast forward to my late teens, after enduring a particularly bad haircut at age 21, I made a firm decision to cut my hair myself and never looked back. This led to a more disciplined and precise approach to my hair maintenance.

Transition to Natural Hair Thinning

By the time I reached my mid-20s, my skills improved to the point where my husband only had to give me a trim every few months. The key to success was his meticulous approach, starting with combing my hair and sectioning it, and then trimming it layer by layer. The technique used was the blunt snip method, ensuring that the hair was cut in a way that supported its natural growth and health.

Adopting New Tools

While I did return to a barber once in summer 1983, the experience was so disappointing that I never sought professional assistance again. The barber ignored my instructions and left my hair in a state that required a hat for the entire summer. Later, I adopted a FlowBee in the mid-1990s, which made the process faster and more manageable, with almost no cleanup required.

Current Hair Maintenance Routine

Currently, my hair is quite thin on top, and instead of relying on a haircut, I shave my head. I’ve also helped others with their hair, and while some have complained, the majority have been grateful.

Personal Trim and Touch-ups

For more frequent touch-ups, especially when my hair reaches past my elbows, I rely on my husband. He uses a cape to secure the rest of my hair, leaving only a small section at the bottom. He trims this section in 1/2-inch increments, matching the previous layer, ensuring a neat and natural look every time. This method not only looks professional but also helps in maintaining the health of my hair, avoiding split ends.

In summary, my journey with self-haircuts has been a learning process. From experimenting with a simple pair of scissors to mastering the blunt snip method and utilizing modern tools, self-haircuts have become a personal and satisfying experience for me. My husband's expertise in using the proper techniques ensures that my hair stays healthy and looking great.
