A Whiskey Connoisseur's Take: Bourbon vs. Rye
When it comes to whiskey, I find that my preference often hinges on my mood. I have a deep love for both bourbon and rye, but there are certain instances where one reigns supreme over the other. Depending on my day-to-day mood, I gravitate towards different varieties, but I must admit that even when in the mood for bourbon, I tend to lean towards higher rye content bourbons for that perfect spice.
My Daily Ryes and Bourbons
My go-to everyday bourbons are Bulleit or 1792. For a daily rye, it's always Bulleit Rye. While Whistlepig and Angels Envy Rye represent the pinnacle of rye whiskey in my taste, both come with a heftier price tag, making them more of a special occasion libation. However, when I return from a recent overseas deployment, asking for Bulleit Rye says it all; it's a flavor that reminds me of home with its perfect balance of spice.
Recent Tendencies: A Shift Towards Bourbon
Lately, I've been finding myself drawn more towards bourbon, and, to no surprise, I often reach for Bulleit again. Despite the criticism that surrounds Bulleit—like the unnecessary speculation about its “MGP” status—I believe it's all about the taste, and it's simply delicious. With a wide range of quality bourbons available now, it's the perfect time to explore different varieties and find your new favorite.
On the bourbon front, my absolute favorite is currently Blantons. Whenever I find a bottle, it feels like finding a rare gem, but it's hard to come by and often more expensive than Bulleit or 1792. For corn whiskey, my preference leans towards Balcones True Blue 100. As for wheated whiskey, it's a tie between Pappy 12 Year and Wellers Reserve Antique 107.
Conclusion: Embrace Your Whiskey Journey
Whiskey, whether bourbon or rye, is a personal and subjective journey. It’s important to explore different varieties and find what speaks to you. Whether you prefer the sweet and delicate notes of bourbon or the full-bodied and spicy flavors of rye, enjoy your journey with every sip.
